REVISITED: Where to Get FREE Stock Images Legally (37 Free Sites + 3 Free Trials)

Photographer & Content Creator - Alberta, Canada - Pixels by Tina

Hey Everybody!

Okay, so I often see posts and questions from fellow bloggers, photographers and graphic designers wondering where should they get free stock photos without having to worry about copyright infringement.

Listed below is a curated a list of beautiful websites for free stock photos. I did verify that each website was what it claimed to be and that the quality of the images was on par with my own. Before we get to the list, there are a few things you should be familiar with if you're using free stock photography libraries.

You want to be searching for Creative Commons Zero (CC0) licenses. They allow you to download, copy, modify, and sometimes distribute the photos, even for commercial purposes and as editorial images, all without asking permission.
But always check the license as some photos may require attribution. The website's license link can almost always be found at the very top or the very bottom of the Home page, for each site. Sometimes, it can be found on the About page. I've done my best to highlight which license they fall under but I still advise you to do your own research and determine how these images can be used, just in case things have changed on the site.

The only serious restriction is that identifiable people, like celebrities and politicians, may not appear in a bad light or in a way that they may find offensive unless they give their written consent. Whenever you're needing someone's consent, get it in writing! You should also make sure the depicted content (people, logos, private property, etc.) is suitable for your application and doesn't infringe on any rights. Be respectful of registered trademarks as well. For example, if there is a Nikon logo/product in a photo, you should write “Nikon, the Nikon logo and all products are trademarks of Nikon Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.” The same with other brands, again, you’re responsible for how you use the photos.

Although it is not required, it's always appreciated when you can provide attribution to the artist. Just type "Photography by..."

Alright! Let's get to it, shall we?

1. Pik Wizard

With an extensive library and over 20,000 images exclusive to Pik Wizard, this site offers the most photos of people and office settings in great quality I've ever seen! These are the shots you usually have to buy but this site offers some for free and without any attributions. Something else I've never seen is a free stock site being connected with an editing app, DESIGN WIZARD. That's pretty cool guys. I suggest you visit their user agreement page and read the license links they provide as well. When I was asked to take a look, I was impressed, thus earning the #1 spot. Check it out!
